So I was living in New York city when the new iPhone was released. I was pretty excited about it and wanted to go out and get one right away. So I took a trip down to the 5th ave store only to find out the line was 7 hours long, and people were camping out a day ahead.
So, I went home disappointed but still knowing that my time would come and the lines would not last. Each day I would call all the stores in Manhattan and get the same answer; “the lines are 6 hours long”. Weeks went by and this continued. I could not believe it. Everywhere I went there was a line and it was at least 4 hours long even one month after the release.
Then finally I called the Soho store and asked the question and they finally gave me the response I was looking for. “There are no lines”. I immediately got in a cab and headed to the store. I got there and found no lines outside, but there was a line inside. It had about 12 people and they told me it would be 20-30 minutes. 2.5 hours later, I was still waiting…
Then finally I got to the top of the line and got my phone ☺ I went home and got all my settings transferred and I was very excited, new technology is one of my favorite things in the world, any new technology. 3G iPhone came with the promise of fewer dropped calls and faster speeds, so the first thing I did was try the internet. I got online with the phone and went to espn.com, and much to my chagrin, it was SLOW! I could not believe how slow it was, it was no faster than my old iPhone. I checked the phone to make sure I was getting a 3G signal and I was. All my friends in Washington state were talking about how fast their internet was, and here I was wondering what was wrong with my phone. Finally the dinger went off in my head. Of course it’s slow. I live in Manhattan where the lines were 6 hours long for 3 months, which means the network has way too many users on it.
Once I went back to Washington and tested the internet on the 3G network I saw the speeds that AT&T promised and I was pleased. However, the dropped calls continued. Apple has since released updates that have helped with the dropped calls and I have nothing but love for my new iPhone 3G. The phone seems even more durable than the older phone. Scratches do to show up as easily. I really like the app store. Apple did the right thing allowing third party applications on the iPhone. Apple has finally realized that opening up a little will give them a bigger market share. Along with bigger market share will come the pitfalls that Microsoft deals with daily, with people trying to hack. But the good certainly outweighs the bad.
All in all I am very happy with my 3G iPhone. I just downloaded the wordpress application that will allow me to post blog entries from the phone easily.
