Those that know me well know that I can be characterized as one of the world’s most picky eaters. If something contains more than two or three ingredients I hesitate to try it. Which leads me to today.
My wife Corrinne, made a reservation for her sister and I to go to L’Ecole the restaurant of the French Culinary Institute where she is currently attending. The restaurant has a
prix fixe & a la carte lunch menu which consists of one appetizer,
entrée, and dessert. Their dinner menus are 4 course and 5 course prix fixe. Now I am a meat and potatoes type of guy, so I was really nervous about doing this today and making sure I do nothing to embarrass her.
I ordered the Grilled Rib-Eye Steak as my entrée and I ordered it medium-well as per my instructions done Corrinne, my wife to not order anything well done. They started us out with some appetizers of which I do not remember any of the names. I did not dive into any of them, but I did give some of them a taste and they were really good. They then brought us our entrée and my steak was so good . I was so impressed with the taste. The first part of the steak was medium and I ate it anyway. As I got further along it became more medium well, and I have to admit, the medium was a lot tastier. I sure hope Corrinne does not read this because , that will mean the end of my days of getting well done steaks!
We then ordered our desserts and I got the chocolate pudding. Much to my surprise the pudding was more like cake and it too was really good. So in a nut shell, today I expanded my eating horizons slightly today. I learned that medium steaks are really good, and desserts are not always what they seem on the menu.
I could not write this whole thing and not mention Jenny. She is my sister-in-law and she is the one that went with me. She tried everything they brought out to us and enjoyed it all. I am sure she would give the restaurant a great review.
After lunch Corrinne gave us a tour of the kitchen, and we meet her classmates. It always amazes me to see what goes into running a kitchen in a restaurant. Even though the restaurant was not very full at the time we were done, it just seemed so busy back in the kitchen. I have to say that this lunch was a great experience and I have a better appreciation for what Corrinne is doing everyday at school.
L’Ecole is located at 462 Broadyway, on the corner of Broadway and Grand in Manhattan.
